my biography

A scene from the 1998 film "Dangerous Acts" with music by Ady Cohen

Add to My Profile | More Videos

Welcome people! My name is Ady Cohen and I am a film composer who also composes music for the stage, TV and the concert hall. I'm the winner of the 1998 Israeli Academy Award for Best Film Score. The film, "Dangerous Acts", won seven Academy Awards including Best Director. I have quite a lot of experience in composing, arranging, orchestrating, conducting and performing music (both acoustic and MIDI) for feature films, short films, TV films, dramas and series, commercials, theater and dance.

Having come from a family of musicians (most of them with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra), I was naturally drawn into the world of music, and soon enough became very successful at it. On the basis of my early work, the late Maestro Leonard Bernstein became my patron and sponsored
my studies at New York University where I earned a Fine Arts Degree. I proceeded to win numerous awards and scholarships both in the US and in Israel.

Professionals in the industry have said about my music:

"Your music shows a lot of imagination and skill. I think you are very talented"
(Lalo Schifrin, Academy Award winning composer, "Mission: Impossible")

"I want to emphasize Ady's extraordinary talent as a film composer. He has a rare and special gift to give musical expression to visual images"
(Zbigniew Rybczynski, Academy Award winning director, "Tango")

"Yours is lovely music, Ady, and provides some hope for the future of film scoring, for one reason, because it gets away from the handful of tiresome and musically uninteresting clichés we are exposed to in virtually every new theatrical film. Your lyricism and humanity shine through"
(William H. Rosar, editor, "The Journal of Film Music")

I have composed over 30 film scores in Israel, the USA and Europe. I've written the music for numerous theater plays and dance performances, as well as for TV films and series. My talents are also employed by the advertising industry in TV, cinema and radio commercials and jingles.

The 2005 Park City Film Music Festival, a side festival of Sundance, honored me with a special screening of 3 films, by director Dominic De lay, for which I composed the music. The festival also granted these films the Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Film Music.

In May 2001 my concert piece "Piazzolla Song-Cycle" was premiered at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York, winning praise from the press. Since 2002, I have begun a fruitful working relationship with animator Gil Alkabetz of "Run Lola Run"'s fame, which has resulted, so far, in 3 award-winning films.

I teach and lecture on Film Music and Music History as faculty member at three prestigious Israeli colleges: the Film & TV Department at the Negev Academic College, the Animation Department at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, and the Animation Department at the Open University, Tel-Aviv.

I live in Yafo, the old city of Tel-Aviv, Israel, in a beautiful house near the old city port, with my wife, Bavat Marom, a world-renowned opera singer (www.bavatmarom.com), our 2 children Lyle and Noot and millions of cats.

My son, Lewis has Asperger Syndrome (a form of Autism). He was also diagnosed in April 2008 with Myasthenia Gravis, a very rare complex neuromuscular auto-immune disorder with approximately 100,000 cases diagnosed worldwide and for which there is no cure.

The video from my CD, "Countdown to Midnight" for "The Mad Hatter" has been posted at YouTube! Everything we do through the "Midnight In Chicago" initiative I founded and created to help individuals and families dealing with Autism.

We have learned that auto-immune disorders are diagnosed in 46% of immediate families where there is a child diagnosed with Autism. Auto-immune disorders are diagnosed in only 26% of extended families where there is no diagnosis of Autism.

Help us raise awareness of Autism and funds for Autism Organizations by being part of our Street Team who forwards information to others who may be interested in making this world a better place in 2009 for individuals and families dealing with Autism.

I am asking you to pass this link along to your friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances.

Thank you and all the best for the holidays.

Hey Ady,

Wow!!! Your work is huge. We stumbled upon your page by mistake and that was luck indeed.
First of all we were intrigued by your influences and then... the music you create is of great inspiration and impact.
Two of us also have a classical background, and our producer is into film music too, so it's even more appreciated, even if we're here for our "rock and pop" side...
Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Cheers

So beautiful music, specially "The jump". Very well orchestrated. Congratulations my friend.

Hi Ady; Just wanted to congratulate you on the musical interpretation of the images in Jump with the piano and orchestra. You hit the spot perfectly. The combination of the simple piano theme with the power of the horn section and strings lifting it worked perfectly, but you left enough space for the piano to do its job without swamping it with the power of the orchestral backing. Really nice...Very evocative and thoughtful. Long been an ambition of mine to score a film using piano and orchestra...Maybe one day!
Best wishes from Madrid.

Hi again Ady,
I´ve just watched the clip from "Dangerous Acts".

Impressive film clip, the music competes with lots of sound effects, yet manages to do a great emotional impact with a minimalistic approach. Bravo!

Hi Ady,
I stopped by and found your great music. Really good tracks, "The Jump" is simply fantastic - filled with emotions and inner images. I also enjoyed "My Jungle".

And its a pretty impressive bio you've got...

Nice feel to these pieces. Even the more upbeat stuff has some nice touches but I think your forte is shown in the first couple of tracks.

Obviously a lot of talent here.

Hello Ady.

I love your music and sounds. They are fantastic. It is a pleasure to listen Song for Bavat and The Jump. I have enjoyed very much. Congratulations.

Greetings from Seville, Spain, Maite.

Your music just put a big smile on my face. It's early morning in Toronto - and cold outside - but your "song for Bavat" brought a bit of summer inside.

"The jump" is a stunning track - fantastic build-up - just an outstanding treatment of sounds and emotions. Very good balance between of silence and intensity.

Those two tracks are easily my favourites. Your other tracks have really good ideas, but to my taste are more uneven. "Jungle" in particular could probably benefit from being reproduced in a more current sound.

But you clearly have outstanding skills in composing for classical instruments - your harmonies are just beautiful. Thanks for sharing all of these - whether I love all tracks or not, I certainly respect the wide range of styles.

Hey Ady,

Got to listen to your tracks, both here and on your site. There's a lot of variance here, which is great. You're a prolific writer, and make the journey an interesing experience. Ok. which one ? Hard to say, although I like "Sandra's Letter", very origional, I'd have to say I like the breezy and laidback feel of "The Light", cool tone and texture, and sonically interesting. Best to you,

cheers, niteshift
