my biography

I was born in Lyon (France) in 1953, and I started studying the piano on my own at 16. As I played the piano for only eight years I have been invited twice by the Maestro Georgy Cziffra who let me play some of my compositions at Saint Frambourg, Senlis in front of a large audience. Georgy Cziffra complimented my work with those words""A unique style that I find very personal and captivating" and recommanded me to Suzy Bossard winner of the first international Cziffra award and professor at the CNSMD of Lyon.

My early interests led me to explore a wide range of musical genres including rock'n'roll, blues, jazz, and classical. I finally dedicated myself exclusively to my own personal style. My compositions are primarily organized around the theme of personnal developpement.

Albums: Water, sky and light (1991), Childish games (1997), Per aspera ad astra (2005).

An original musical conception
I am a musician of emotion rather than theory, of movement rather than concept. I seek fluidity rather than structure. I seek light and eternity instead of power. I have chosen to compose music that creates harmony, that is pleasant and relaxing to listen to and yet that has depth in its conception. That is why working with sonorities and touch is very important. I have had to develop a piano technique quite different from the traditional ones in order to avoid too much percussion of the keyboard. The result is a full and round sound."

What the press says:

°A unique style that I find very personal and captivating. (Georges Cziffra)

°Alain Baraige "An extraordinary pianist !" (le progrès)

°Alain Baraige does not hit the keys but caresses them (l'est républicain)

°His music is all softness, emotion and pleasure! (lyon matin)

°A composer of the emotions ! For all sensibilities ! (le figaro)

° The audience was charmed by the extraordinary piano recital of the french composer and soloist Alain Baraige. His music is unusual and deeply marked by an original philosophy of life. ( telegraphul de pahova, roumania)

Heralded as a "composer of the emotions" by Le Figaro (France), Alain Baraige has moved audiences throughout France and Europe with the fluidity and harmonies of his music.

His first album, "Eau, Ciel et Lumière" (Water, Sky and Light), was released to great critical acclaim and received international attention, most notably in the USA where it was broadcast over 270 radio stations. To celebrate the release of his second album "Enfantillages" (Childish Pursuits) in 1997, FNAC, the largest record retailer in France, underwrote a national tour.

Alain Baraige's media credits are numerous. He has the distinction to have a number of shows on France's national radio station "France Musique" dedicated entirely to his music. He has also performed live on several national television shows in France including "Les Visiteurs du Jour" by Anne Sinclair, amongst others.

Alain Baraige is regularly invited to perform at concerts throughout France and Europe. He was selected to perform for the inauguration of the George Enescu memorial in Romania where he had the honor of performing on the late composer's piano. At the invitation of Georges Cziffra, Alain Baraige has been a frequent guest performer of the Liszt Musical Foundation. His live performances have taken him to many cities in France and Europe including Paris, Lyon, Tours, Florence (Italy) and Ploiesti (Romania) as well as New York City (Steinway&Sons and the Genesis Center) and Johannesbourg (South Africa).

Alain Baraige now shares his time between teaching, composition and performing. He has currently finished his third album "Per aspera ad astra" where he evokes the themes of adulthood and personal growth.

Dear Alain,

First thank you very much for your nice comments on my music.

I listened to your music and I think you are very talented. I especially like the piano pieces - "Les Nimbes..." and "Pirouettes...". And you play so beautifully on them! Very French, very Debussy - I love it!

Hi Alain, how are you? Thanks for your friendship at Mi7.
Your music belongs to the (very few) ones on my list I provided with an asterisk, to remember me of its beauty. I'm fascinated by the human voice, so it goes without saying that 'In Medias Res' and 'Elapsae Animae' are my favorites.
I hardly dare ask you to listen to my songs and vote for me, (if you like them of course), but it seems to be the only way of dealing with this Real World Studio Contest. I hope you don't mind.
Greetings and success for you, your interpreters and your music from the lowlands of Holland,
Richard
