Copenhagen, Vanløse Denmark
I was born in Nørrebro, Copenhagen on december 9, 1972. My father (Knud-Erik Kengen) is a classical composer and church organist, so my early years were dominated by classical and jazz music (my dad pretty much despises anything with a pulse feel, so rock'n'roll or contemporary stuff was not part of the agenda!).
In 1978 at age 6 I heard the french composer Jean-Michel Jarre for the first time, and was completely floored by this strange and melodical electronic universe of sound. I knew I had found my vocation. From then on I started listening to the radio and record the songs I liked to a small portable cassette recorder my dad got for me. I started playing the piano and engage in my first feeble attemts at writing my own songs at around age 8.
At age 11 I joined the Tivoli Guard and learned the marching drum as well as attempting to learn the French Horn. At this point, I had also started taking piano lessons, so between school and practice I had to give something up. That meant abandoning the French Horn (I guess drums and pianos are a bit more interesting to most pre-teens). I was also a frequent visitor at the local music store (Super Sound), where I dreamed of the day where I could walk out of there with a synthesizer under my arm.
At age 14 I finally got my first synthesizer workstation (the Roland D-20), and a happier teen was hard to come by ;) Shortly thereafter, having earned the money from delivering newspapers, I bought my first Atari computer with Steinbergs Cubase music software (v. 1.5), and the first hip-hop and funk bands were formed. Having trouble concentrating on history and math in high school, I dropped out and pursued a self taught career in contemporary music in 1991.
I was lucky enough to get hired at the afore mentioned music store very quickly, which was like a dream come true. It put me in touch with the cutting edge of music technology (as well as entiteling me to great discounts - yeah, baby!), and I have worked there on and off up untill 2001. In 2004 I started working at Musikhuset Aage Jensen i Copenhagen, where I am in charge of the computer music division. Still there, and still loving it!
Through my work in Super Sound I got in touch with Danish producer Chief 1 (Rockers By Choice, Blå Øjne, Stina Stina, Christian, Danny Kool and many more) and along with Executive Jesper Wennick we created the dance act Sound Of Seduction, which achieved great succes. That was in 1992.
Since then I have worked as a songwriter, technician, producer, remixer, vocal coach and much more for a variety of Danish acts such as Blå Øjne, Bikini, Ann-Louse, Nude, S.O.A.P., Zoom, Evamaria Linnet, Toy Box, Rollo & King, Anders Blichfeldt, Sonny & Jeanne, Kristine Blond, Erann DD, and many, many more.
Over the years I have had various studios in several locations in and around Copenhagen, and at present I am working out of my small bedroom studio in my apartment in Vanløse. Thanks to the amazing evolvement of music technology, and since I am more a producer/programmer than a "real" musician, most of the basic stuff as well as vocals can easily be recorded at home.
