my biography

JOANPi was born in Athens, Greece. Pretty soon with her mother's art influence in the house (& probably genes as mom was taken piano lessons for some time) while growing up she got a special affair with music via dance. After at the age of 5 a mini electric guitar, at the age of 9 all it was needed was a visit to a schoolmate's house who had a keyboard, as soon JOANPi got the same one as a Xmas gift (asked for it) , the music journey officially began, that was what JOANPi wanted to do for the rest of her life. So after years of playing & just in the end of  schooltime in 1997 after been playing others songs she started writing her own lyrics, then music, songs.

In 1999 started playing the guitar, also tried drums for a while (thanks to her favourite cousin for borrowing his drum set).

In 2000 took the Music and Technology course & graduated in 2002 at a private training institute in Athens.

During the course time she went to many gigs where she met other people that asked her to form with a new pop band, thankfully this project was never done.

Year of 2003: she started doing some remixes (unofficially/non released) & wrote lot new songs.

In 2004 she went to London to see n learn about the biggest European music scene & to continue studies at university for course Music and Media Management but soon realized that need to focus solely on songwriting so after a short time living in London came back to Greece where in early 2005 she started establishing herself as a solo artist named JOANPi (the name is of her initials, didn't know it was popular in Spain!) .

Late 2005 JOANPi setup her own home studio so where mostly she writes her songs ,jam (or what may come with others).

At that time she was notified (after been contacted) that  was chosen to participate at a new Music Festival called Commusication in Gothenburg, Sweden for summer 2006 (though in the end the festival was cancelled for financial reasons). (www.commusication.org)

Also in 2006 she was involved with an exclusive new coming releases online project for one of the major record labels, attended Athens Music Forum 2006 about the latest developments in music industry. (www.athensmusicforum.gr) (JOANPi was always involved with one way or another into projects related to music industry).

After been in contact with two foreign managers that did end without result due to bad timing and distance, JOANPi  joined MMF (UK) as a self managed artist so later to release her songs on her own (with the help of Tunecore).

Late of 2006/ 2007 JOANPi participated to a few international songwriting competitions with her song 'A Day at the Beach (wrote in 2004); that was included in her album
'this is JOANPi - EP (originally to be released in 2006) & this is JOANPi - EP (Edited Version) released in 2007.

First Award: JOANPi song was the monthly winner & mentioned to be one of overall high ratings by Judges in Dance/Electronic category in the International Songwriting Contest SONG OF THE YEAR.

Second Award: received an Honourable Mention (Instrumental Category) in the 11th Annual 'Unisong' International Song Contest. (www.unisong.com)

Third Award:  Semi-Finalist position (Instrumental Category) in UK Songwriting Contest 2007. That year were just under 5,000 entries, approximately 23% made the semi-final. (www.songwritingcontest.co.uk)

JOANPi song 'A Day at the Beach' was successive also at charts:

Was 1 on 5th November since 10th September entry on 1019 in continuous rise up at IAC Charts - Electronic Genre, while after was on top 25 for over 12 weeks.

In the end of 2007 JOANPi released a new album 'Midnight - Single' in digital download also via Tunecore. The title track 'Midnight' won the award of Electronic Track of the Day (22 Nov 2007) & was featured on GarageBand's Electronic main page.

JOANPi was on top 100 on myspace.com (Electronica genre) , purevolume.com (Electronic, Pop genre) charts, as well on Ourstage.com on various contests incuding being on 1 outside of United States spotlight for Club/Dance genre, June 2008.

February of 2008 she was contacted so her song 'A Day at the Beach' to be featured in elements (in rotation) of DIRECTV's channel 'The 101'. The '101' plays to 40 million viewers, the DIRECTV Group provides digital television service to about 16.8 million customers in the United States and over 4.8 million customers in Latin America.

Spring/Summer of the same year JOANPi wrote some new songs included song called 'Jimmy' (titled after her nephew the song was about) to be available for free download at 7digital indiestore and more (http://indiestore.7digital.com/joanpi).

'Jimmy' was successive on Reverbnation Electronic Chart as reached 2 on local (Greece) Chart and 161 on International one (September 2008).

After that till the present JOANPi has been involved with other projects as well like a Greek local music tv chanel.

As for her artist related plans new album is to be released via Tunecore on 22th December or later (celebrating her 20th year being involved with music).

You can buy albums of JOANPi in digital download on some of the major digital stores like iTunes, Amazon MP3, Rhapsody, eMusic, 7digital, lala , Shockhound.

Hey, Joan.

If, like me, you are not getting notification of personal messages and are getting the "code monkey" error note. I've sent you a personal message. I'll try through your web site, too.

All the best, my dear.

Hello JOANPi,
Thank you for your comment back and thank you for voting for my "erosion". you used to study Nihongo? that's very cool. :)
I decided to add 2 more from my old songs until I finish any of new ones since lots of nice ppl like you had sent me encouranging messages and asked me to add more though I didn't enroll them to the contest.
It'd be great to hear a feedback from you sometime when you have time. :)

Thank you,

Noritaka

Hi Ionna,

I like your new track "Darker than light".
While listening to it I was thinking about doubling the arpeggio's sometimes, to make it sound more fluid...

Hey JOANPi,

Listend ( at last ) to A day at the Beach.

Harmonically well structrured, I like the tone of the sweep you are using, and the beat interludes work well. It's got that classic analogue sound, but I think it also has room for a rich digital overtone also. Clever change of pace keeps it interesting. The best to you with it.

cheers, niteshift

Hi Ionna,

thank you for your kind words.
I have enjoyed your music too. I wish I could master rhythm as well as you, but I am more a "melody"-man I guess... I always struggle with that and it never seems to fit my music.
You've got my vote too!

Hi again JOANPi
I have just reproduced, remastered and reloaded all my songs. If you have the time to spare please come over, listen and tell me what you think.
Take care!

Thanks for the add JOANPi and the comment. You`re really into drums and you`re good at it. I particularly like the way the beat slows down at the end of the day on the beach ... gone and yet the same ... very neat.
