my biography

Played bass since I was 16 or so in variety of R&B and new wave bands in the UK. Moved to Japan about 20 years back and got into synths and computer music in a big way.

Recently re-discovered the joys of "real" instruments - mainly slide resonator guitar and lap steel.

my sounds

Title: Keep Running Back to You
Noalbum_80
Description: Uses an 8-string lap steel for the tremolo effect, and an ordinary 6-string for the twang. Add a fretless bass, a tambourine and a guiro to go with the drums, and some vocals. Three different reverbs and a tape delay, as well as lots of compressors (drums all went through SSL emulation, bass through Joe Meek, etc.).
Title: Strange Dobro
Noalbum_80
Description: Resonator guitar closemiked with real acoustic percussion behind it.
Title: Fishing Hole
Noalbum_80
Description: Taken from a quotation from John Fogerty, describing the resonator guitar's sound. A mixture of rootsy low-tech resonator and high-tech VST synths.
Title: Bad Day
Noalbum_80
Description: A very traditional blues, using a lap steel as the main lead
Title: Hanging Out With a Better Class of Loser
Noalbum_80
Description: Apologies to Randy Travis for taking his original phrase. I'm not happy with my singing, but I do like the lap steel pretending to be a pedal steel, and I'm pleased with the overall mix.

my influences

Were do I end the list? I listen to almost anything and everything, from Brian Eno to Roy Acuff, taking in Debussy, Bach, Philip Glass and Beethoven along the way. I really enjoy listening to Mozart opera, and I also enjoy Uncle Tupelo. But I have to admit that I'm not that keen on heavy metal or any of the dance styles whose names I don't even know, and which I can't distinguish by listening to them.
