my biography

Long time music enthusiast. Into writing songs, recording, arranging, mixing, remixing, being remixed, collaborating, jamming. Like a few other MI7 members, I got coaxed out of the solitude of my little studio by submitting a few remixes to realworldremixed.

This in turn led to a minor theory, my long distance online collaboration project to sketch some songs and set them free for remixing. There are several quite astounding remixes over there now, including some by fellow MI7 members.

emxr.com :: the extreme mixer is my blog about remixing, collaboration and related issues.

StudioLocally I host regular jam sessions with 4 more friends (our 5 piece includes drums, bass, guitar, piano and me on assorted synths). Our jam sessions are exercises in nostalgia covering rock classics.

So my studio is a hybrid of a jamming studio and a recording / remixing studio. For jamming I pretty much use only hardware, while for recording and remixing I use almost only software synths).

my sounds

Title: a minor theory: Wait
Clocks
Description: This is a new original song from my collaboration project "a minor theory". My musical partner "Vox" (who appropriately enough does the singing) and I collaborate over the Internet without ever having met in person. Our web site is at www.aminortheory.com and as we do for all of our songs, we'll be posting remix packs for this song over the next couple of days. There's more about how we met and stuff at our web site. If you should happen to visit, don't forget to listen to some of the remixes of our first three songs as well - including some awesome remixes by some amazingly talented mi7 members.
Title: Abell - distant galaxy mix (remixing c.layne)
Galaxycluster
Description: found this mesmerizing a cappella by c.layne (clayne.net) over at ccmixter.org and had some fun with it. Licensed under creative commons attribution, non-commercial (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/)
Title: Always Maybe (remixing CalendarGirl's July)
Calendargirl
Description: This is my take (more easily downloadable at ccMixter.org) of a wonderful pop song by CalendarGirl (http://calendarsongs.com) of ccMixter.org fame. The remix is quite different than the original, which can be found here: http://www.calendarsongs.com/mp3/July2.mp3 Featuring the guitar work of The RichMiester from my jam band. Licensed under the Creative Commons http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/ I also uploaded the vocal submix to ccMixter.org, if anyone else wants to take a crack at a remix around the vocal harmonies: http://ccmixter.org/media/files/spinmeister/12205
Title: Moments in Space (remixing DJ_Rkod's Space-Based Utopia)
Spaceimages_1970_68596803
Description: I had a little fun with DJ Rkod's space based utopia. My first go at remixing something entirely instrumental / ambient. Kept song structure close to the original, used almost all original sample files. Added a couple of subtle musical homages, and some snippets from an early 50s BBC radio play I found on archive.org (Journey_into_Space3_91-08-02_World_in_Peril_07 http://www.archive.org/details/JourneyIntoSpaceOTRKIBM). Mashed up the whole thing through a few compressors and filters and this is what came out.
Title: remixing Salman Ahmad - Natchoongi - Karachi Radio Mix
Radiotowers
Description: This is my remix of the song Natchoongi by Salman Ahmad. Used original vocal tracks made available under creative commons licensing at ccMixter.org: http://ccmixter.org/salman/view/contest/sources The original version of the song is here: http://ccmixter.org/contests/salman/salman_-_Natchoongi_(Full_Mix).mp3 ---- REMIXER NOTES: This remix was originally born from imagining this song being performed in concert with Salman leading plenty of audience participation in a three-way question/response format between the singers, the instrumentalists and the audience. However for this remix I ended up using a “Radio” effect to distinguish between the two vocal groups.

And again, thank you very much. Although I didn't manage to remix Wait, it did inspire two other remixes in a very direct way. And that is apart from enjoying the original. I for one will be looking forward to what you guys come up with next.

Hi Spinmeister,

Thanks for your kind words over at my (other) blog. I actually used some of the other drum loops from Wait in another remix, which you can find here (should you be interested).

Regards,

Michel.

P.S.: Btw, nice interview with CG.

Your Natchoongi remix is wonderful SPIN-M ...but my fave listen is WAIT - mysterious mood and Vox has a great expressive and clear vox.

Hello. Nice to see you after such a long break. I listened to Always Maybe remix. Nice arrangement and sounds very good. And very, very nice vocal harmonies.

Spin Mr!
Saw you were on line, so I thought I'd pop on over. Did someone say the '80’s???

Don´t come here so often in the last days, but coincidencely had a look today and what do I detect?

A new and long expected tune of "AMT". Now that´s a good surprise because you have done such a beautiful tune which stands for me in a directly tradition of music of the beloved 80´s but with a modern sound of 21st century.
I love this synthline and of course the sound(s) that appears when the vocals have a break. That´s terrificly nice!
I think it´s especially the part starting at 1:08(and again at 3:48) when Vox is singing this refrain followed by this melancholic melodie. I love when Vox sings with a deep voice and the spare phrases to change then in a very pleasant and melodic manner.
This brings up memories from the 80´s when I was still a young man and....no, no stop..:-)
You both did a very great job, also regarding the circumstances you have done this(and the other tracks). Astonishing collaboration and a remarkable production composer-and productionwise.

Yo, Spinmeister.
No apologies necessary, my man—“Dinna fret your brow” over such social graces, tho’ I appreciate that your observance of responding in a timely manner is important to you. Nice.
Re: Distant Galaxy Mix, the vocals set against the pulsing musical groove were what specifically gave me the instant feel of an Enya/M & Ps production. Let me know if you revisit Bowie’s A2A’s, and what you think.
Thanks again for your words of support, too; who doesn’t like to receive such positive vibes? Since we’re in “space” with regard to Distant Galaxy Mix, here’s (now, let me see if I’ve got this right) a TUNE that I was told, feels somewhat like floating in space. You be the juge of that one, Spin.
Obviously 8—), I am grateful as well, for your instruction, as the link above belies. Thank you, El Maestro de Spin. All the best, my man. Later, RT of DnA

Yo, El Maestro de Spin.
Not that familiar with this remixing—YES, YES, YES, we've heard that "remixing" line many times before, Artie. Something else, perh-lease!
Oh-Kay, then, Right, well, following on the heels of AT's "Attaboy, Thumbs Up," I agree. Distant Galaxy Mix/End of the line, is lovely. Reminds me of ... Don't you hate it when people say that, Spin? Anyway, nice track. Maybe I'll take your advice and check out the remixing world ... maybe. (—8
Dude, nice fill @ 3:03!

Happy new year Niels. So great to know you . All the best for 2008

Hey, Spinmeister.
Thanks for your comments. Am unfamiliar with the remixing world, but a nice introduction was your emxr.com blog. Especially liked "a wonderful afternoon"—the meeting in person, of someone who, up until then, had only been your virtual friend—an experience that could have gone either way. Nice! Later. RTQ

Howdy! Just when you thought it was safe...
I figured I'd stick my beak into this mi7 thing, the "Mountain King" remix is a lot of fun... I'm sooo jealous of your studio, I'm still in bargain-basement-land ;)

Hi Spinmeister, how are you? I've set out on listening and voting for my virtual friends (if required). What can I say to a professional like you? Your music is good. I particularly like 'Always Maybe', the intro, the beat, the arrangements, and the voice of CalendarGirl.
Please check out my songs and vote for me if you like them in any way… Thanks!
