my sounds

Title: End of Time
Img_1602
Description: The song which ends the Fire In The South live set. Only a demo version at this stage as we are currently re-recording properly with Martyn Phillips which is why I haven't put it in the contest.
Title: Vampire Ritual
Stills24
Description: Collaboration with a fantastic Bulgarian female choir called Cosmic Voices. Originally an entirely 'a cappela' recording in a chapel in Sofia. The rest of the track I remixed live with guitar and bass synth for a Steinberg Cubase demo at Wembley a few years back and it came out so well that I decided that was the only version I wanted anyone to hear. To be used in a forthcoming vampire film I am scoring.
Title: Comfort
Img_1605
Description: One side of our current double-A side, a song about all the things which suck you into the "normal life" until one day it all goes wrong. The song itself is meant to be like a canon going around endlessly like everyday life until the crisis hits (the Middle 8 which I wrote with Vanessa doing her amazing wordless vocal - guess which Floyd track inspired this bit!)
Title: Father
Img_1584
Description: My band Fire In The South in full flight, from Eastern opening through savage vocal and synth to full-on rock guitar! Side 1 of our current double-A side and my favourite, for all those who like the message in your face. This is Stoney's vitriol at its best taking Christ's last words on the cross and applying them to modern society. My synth solo is going to be used as the signature tune for a UK TV show. You can see the video for this at http://youtube.com/watch?v=AGM-CrM3yro
Title: England
Img_1596
Description: My band Fire In The South's opening song at live gigs and festivals

my influences

Every one from Ralph Vaughn-Williams to Muse, by way of Ennio Morricone, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, Yes, Floyd, and others too munerous to mention

Wow Wiff, the list of people you met and worked with seems endless.
I really adore Lisa Gerrard's work, and I hope one day she will hear my work too.
I watched her dvd Sanctuary a couple of time and went to a couple of live shows. She seems such a deep and thoughtful person...

best wishes,

Jef

Hi Paul, in todays internet world it would not be a problem to send you a song - you record something at home and resend it ? So no need to visit Duesseldorf. I will not be offended in case you don't like but if yes - well than lets discuss how to arrange something sending some private messages.

Hi Paul, managed to watch your video for Father and wanted to tell you that I have been blown away. Terrific, Amazing , Fabulous...... You and your band are great. Would love to have one of your synth solo's on one of my tracks it would be a real honor.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the request. I am listening to your songs right now and I like what I am hearing. As has already been said, there are definitely some Floyd influences on most of the songs and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Since the Kate Bush album The Sensual World I have come to like Bulgarian female singing, so Vampire Ritual strikes a chord with me. And all the talk about Five Variants has made me curious, so I am going to download that one from WE7.

Anyway, great stuff, especially the double-A side. So you have got my votes. Good luck in the contest.

Best wishes,

Michel.

Hi there Paul,
Thank you for the big honor, and when I listen to your tracks you're seem to be one of a kind yourself. :-)
Even if some other commenters inhere did refer here to other artists/bands influences, I also discovered and apriciated your own parts of inspiration and gain in all of it. Glad we met.
So thumbs up and good luck with the competition, even if you know already which road leads to Box. :-)
Kind Regards,
Peter

Hi Wiff,

the bulgarian women piece is great and so is the 5 variants piece. All examples that you are at home in a lot of different styles. But what to enter? Hard to tell, I guess the best advice I can give you is just to follow your guts.
The tracks you've entered now sound great too and I gave high votes to them.

Good luck!

Vampire Ritual is great Wiff. Kind of Genesis / Gabriel style this time. If you ask me I would vote for it and insert it instead of England but it's up to you, you'll get my votes mate, the 5 variants may be too experiemental for the contest and it takes some time before it developes so people may not take the time to listen long enough ??? Anyway have fun and good to have you here mate.

The 'Vampire Ritual' is something quite different, but actually very good, catchy and hypnotizing. It's up to you Paul, whether to enter it in stead of one of the other songs or not. Is it far off your track? You seem to make such different kinds of music that it must be hard to make a dicision.
'5 Variants…' seems a little too experimental for this contest. On the other hand, I really don't know. Have to leave you with this I'm afraid…

Hi Wiff,

thank you for your comment and vote.
The new tracks you have uploaded sound great, like mindmovie says, very Pink Floydian. And I was a Pink Floyd fan from the early seventies when I started buying records.
On what you should enter in the contest is a difficult question. I have listened a couple of times to all your tracks. Although Venetian Time is a lovely piece of music, maybe the least suitable for the contest of the five pieces.
It is hard to tell how the contest really works. Sometimes I have got a couple of songs in the top 30 and sometimes not.
I see the contest as an interesting experiment to see how people react to my music.
From my side I try to listen to all the entries, and give my comments and votes to my fellow contestants. It is a great way in getting to know new people and their music. I am not so much into this "gathering votes" thing. I believe that if people like your music they will vote for you anyway.
During the contest I have also switched deleted entries and replaced by new ones. You lose the votes then but that doesn't matter that much too me.
Getting heard and get feedback from the people here is rewarding too...

Anyway, I voted for all your current entries because it is really great work.
If you decide to enter new ones, let me know and I'll vote for them too.

Your bio is quite impressive. I think Peter Gabriel must be about everybody's hero in this community. He has been for me anyway, since my teens and I have a great respect for that man.

best wishes,

Jef

Hi Maestro, thanks for your confidence.
'Comfort' and 'Father' are two great songs. The production seems to have improved also. You've managed to open up the sound more. 'Comfort' is a Floydish song indeed, but the 'deviating' wordless vocal together with the guitar is really thrilling!
Perhaps you could swap 'Venetian Theme' (though it's a good piece in itself) and 'End of Time' with the two new songs, because they have more power, also from the production point of view.
Tell me what your decision is and I'll vote for them.
Good luck,
Richard

Hey Wiff - both new songs are fully to my personal taste. I am a big Pink Floyd fan and these tracks are the best floydish tracks I have heard since years. Vocs, Git's and your synths are killer !!!! My full respect and you've got a new fan mate !!!!!

Hi Paul, how are you?
I discovered I hadn't voted for you yet. So here I am. It won't come as a surprise when I say there's a lot of Floyd influence in your music. Professional stuff.
Hope you'll find some time to listen to my songs again and vote for me too…
