my biography

I have been playing since I was 13. A drummer turned MIDI inputter and producer. I use Reason, sometimes linked up with Nuendo or Cubase. Cumberland River was written by my guitarist and friend, Dax, and produced by me. The other four tracks are part of a project I took up, on my own after we recorded two years or so of jams on MD. I started cutting these up, adding bits, and generally trying to get a sound. Much use made of WAVS and Rex files. I will enter some of these tracks to the Real World thing…

my sounds

Title: Cumberland River
Noalbum_80
Description: This is a Country-gospel song written by my guitarist, and friend, Dax Butler. It is a very beautiful song with some poignant lyrics from life's darker side. This is still a demo, and the singing was Natalie's first take. My production of this song gave me the idea that I might be able to produce other peoples' songs... I did a short Hammond piece for the chorus but my files have mysteriously disappeared! I still nee a Godpel choir at the end, with the repeat of "Cumberland River Flows...." Let me know what you think.
Title: Wandering Wondering
Noalbum_80
Description: The production is unusual, but the idea for this was a hard-core rap. I quite like the operatic 'middle', or chorus. Still need lyrics (and a vocal artist)..... Anyone out there want to take it on?
Title: Shud've seen It
Noalbum_80
Description: This one has got a slight R&B side to it, although how it would land up with a diffferent melody, and a lyric line, is anyone's guess...
Title: Portal
Noalbum_80
Description: In the vein of Portishead, this one was jokingly called Portal. It is near full-production but my mastering is up to shit... hisses at lotsa frequencies.
Title: Where are you Now
Noalbum_80
Description: This is (the romantic) one of four tracks up here today (excl. Cumberland River) that I produced from MD recordings of jams held between a guitarist, bassist, and me, over a two year period. Bass, some guitar, and some drums are live but the rest of the intrumentation has been added. From our 'jam tapes' i was able to get enough material for 17 songs (Rex loops, WAVS). I arranged the cut-ups in Reason for quite a few weeks, non-stop! This one, and the other four, are examples of tracks from (what might be/could have been) an album...

my influences

I listened to a LOT of Zappa, very early on, as well as to bands like The Groundhogs, EL&P, Soft Machine, Gong, Argent...etc. Today, there's not a lot i listen to. But i guess Radiohead is one of my greatest, more recent influences. When i'm in Cape Town (i live in Johannesburg now) i will always go to the local Rastafarian Dancehall gig in Gugulthu (the biggest 'black township' in Cape Town), on a Saturday night and will dance to Dancehall by the likes of Sizzla and Capleton, till the sum comes up. (After going there for a few years I AM STILL the only white boy who ventures there). But wow, do i/we have a good time. Peace and Love, brethren!

You probably mean the Dobaichi sound in The Whole Of The Universe. It sounds a bit off, doesn't it? Maybe it's the character of that instrument or the effect used or even bad tuning by the people who sampled it. It's something I should keep in mind when I go back to that project again. Thanks for the tip.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for uploading these songs. They are all very good. Especially Cumberland River, Wandering Wondering and Shud've Seen It. While I was at it, I also voted for your entries in the Realworld contest. Good luck with that.

Best wishes,

Michel.

Despite my forays into movie music a few years ago - which still persists - i have been working with a lot of remix ideas lately. Mostly i have been taking some jazz classics and putting them with hard core, four-on-the-floor dance beats (and looped afro-cuban riddims)and haven been coming up with some great stuff. Problem is, the Miles Davis people won't let me sample him. So i'll have to get the session players in...
