After the rather easy June, July proved to be a more difficult piece to turn into something half-decent. And ofcourse I failed yet again. But what can one do, except hope for more luck the next time around. Anyway, 10 down and still 2 to go. I was hoping to finish the writing before september, which would mean that I would have been working on it for a year (well, more or less anyway), but the way things are going now I have serious doubts about making such a deadline. Not that it really matters. read more...

As all of you know, I am a devoted mom as well as a composer and musician.  And as all of you know, I am a very vocal advocate for Autism Rights.

I enjoyed participating in Mindmovie's CCC project so much a few months ago that I was thinking it would be interesting to create a similar recording with snippets of my son's insights regarding Autism from an interview done with him in July 2007 and the update interview that was done with him last month.

What I am thinking of doing is using his comments along the lines of a hip hop / vocal dance mix composition.  The purpose of the song would be to bring a better, more positive understanding of how children with Autism perceive the world in which they live ... our world, not their world.

I can only offer credits in lieu of money unfortunately.  All of you are such incredible artists and all of you have been such good online friends to me in good times and in the most troubling times these past few months.

If you are interested in participating in this project (which would be promoted globally with links back to your websites or to your mi7 profile page just as our MIC Audio Podcasts on Autism are global), please email me at ravenmagic2003@yahoo.ca.

Thanks.

 Raven  :-)

Well, that went rather quick, at least for me. Normally it takes me ages to come up with a half-decent result, but now it only took me four evenings…;-) Anyway, as you may already have guessed, I have finished another song. It's the remix of CG's June and it's called Deserts And Monsoons. Credit where credit is due, so here goes… Vocals: CG. Guitars: VG II. Drums: probably Tomas Haake. The rest: Yours Truly. 9 down, 3 to go. read more...

After trying a zillion different last things to add to the song and deciding on only drums from Trifonic's Broken for the chorus, and after freezing instruments, muting tracks, bypassing fx and exporting the song more times than was good for my mental health, I finally can offer you my remix of CG's May, called Hide The Fuse From The Fire. Sometimes I wonder if it's all worth it. read more...

Quotes of the day:
Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up. ...The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11. (don't you just love that root certificate message?)
Now you're thinking "oh God, another Linux zealot going off about Windows"... until you see who wrote it: Bill Gates. Full story at Gizmodo Note: this is actually an old story about Windows XP. Vista, as we all know by now, is even worse. read more...

So, Mr. M sent me this backing track and immediately I felt it wanted to tell a story. I've had this idea for quite a while and I just needed the right opportunity ... and here it was. LYRICS: As a tiny speck of life, he had a big decision to make. Should he go forward or back? Up or down? Left or right? The determination, however, was made for him. A massive jolt to big mamma’s system sent him flying through a maze of underwater caverns. Murky tunnels beckoned him but he just went with the flow. Somehow he made it to shore and shimmied aboard a big white rock. “I’m so tired, I seem to have been swimming forever; if I can just lay here awhile and catch my breath, I’ll be better able to carry on.” So he lay his head down and the moment it hit that outer shell— “Wohhhh,” he found himself falling down, down, tumbling towards the bottom ... bottom of what, though? “Wait a minute, I’m not falling, I’m floating.” He was inside what seemed to be a big translucent egg looking out at the scene he’d left some moments ago. “Is this a dream?” THIS IS REAL LIFE, REAL LIFE, REAL LIFE. THIS IS REAL LIFE, REAL LIFE, NOWHERE TO HIDE, NOWHERE TO GO. THIS IS REAL LIFE. A storm was brewing outside, but he was nice and secure in his refuge. He waited and watched and conditions got worse. He didn’t want to leave but the membrane was getting thinner. Finally, the tide rose and carried him out into the ocean and the little balloon burst its skin in the angry waters, and he was back where he started. “Should I go forward? ... I think I’ll stay here.” He looked around for shelter. There was none. It was all the same—an underworld of wet shapeless form. There were bright lights and shrieks up ahead, and the big storm behind would certainly dash him against the rocks. “What to do, where to go? Best to wait ... surely, always best to wait?” THIS IS REAL LIFE. The noise suddenly got very loud. Terrifying screams bore down on him as if Armageddon was right around the corner. IT’S SO LONELY WITH NOWHERE TO GO, NOWHERE TO HIDE. ( REAL LIFE, REAL LIFE.) THIS IS REAL LIFE, REAL LIFE, REAL LIFE. THIS IS REAL LIFE. Though his innate sense was to stay perfectly still; like a man trapped inside a burning building who instinctively feels there is no choice but to jump, he turned and fled. Faster and faster he ran. “RAN, I’m running now—I’ve got legs. LEGS!” The snapping at his heals seemed to be gaining. The noise was deafening and the lights so raw, he could feel their heat. “I don’t want to die, if I could just find my egg, I could hide and make no sound and nothing would find me, nothing would hurt me. I‘m drowning in water, WATER? But I’m breathing. How? Nooo, they’ve got me. Big clamp ... on my leg pulling me. WAAAHHH, Nooooooooo—I Don’t Want To Dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” Some die at birth. Most live. Which is it to be for you? CHOOSE. Blinded by a light in a white sterile room, he was upside down and drowning in fluid, till a hefty slap kick started the baby’s engine into drive. He formed new sounds and gulped first breaths: He had chosen LIFE! read more...

News just in is that Nokia have bought up Symbian, and intend to release it as Free Software (under the Eclipse Public License) as of today. As far as I'm aware Symbian is currently the most widely used Operating System in the world - there were 100 million phones running Symbian in 2006 - so this means that as of this moment Free Software is now more widely used than proprietary software. That's a pretty significant shift in the way of things, especially considering Symbian own 67% of the smartphone market, with Windows Mobile holding only 13%... read more...

I haven't been posting much in the past couple of months, mainly because I've been taking time to work on a new book and get some personal business stuff out of the way.

Things are looking interesting though... we've been approached about a new record deal, and asked to play some more festivals at the end of the year / beginning of next year. So the plan is to spend as much time as possible in the studio over the next few months and finally finish off all of the things that have been sitting on the hard drive for ages in a half-finished state.

So someday soon I might even get round to putting some new songs on the music player! :-)
