Well, that went rather quick, at least for me. Normally it takes me ages to come up with a half-decent result, but now it only took me four evenings…;-) Anyway, as you may already have guessed, I have finished another song. It's the remix of CG's June and it's called Deserts And Monsoons. Credit where credit is due, so here goes… Vocals: CG. Guitars: VG II. Drums: probably Tomas Haake. The rest: Yours Truly. 9 down, 3 to go. read more...

I've posted a new-ish track here, featuring the same vocals that Jenny Grettve here at MI7 provided for the Blake remix earlier. I wanted to hear the vocals in a new context, so I created all new instrumentals for them - and this is the result. read more...

After trying a zillion different last things to add to the song and deciding on only drums from Trifonic's Broken for the chorus, and after freezing instruments, muting tracks, bypassing fx and exporting the song more times than was good for my mental health, I finally can offer you my remix of CG's May, called Hide The Fuse From The Fire. Sometimes I wonder if it's all worth it. read more...

Quotes of the day:
Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up. ...The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11. (don't you just love that root certificate message?)
Now you're thinking "oh God, another Linux zealot going off about Windows"... until you see who wrote it: Bill Gates. Full story at Gizmodo Note: this is actually an old story about Windows XP. Vista, as we all know by now, is even worse. read more...

News just in is that Nokia have bought up Symbian, and intend to release it as Free Software (under the Eclipse Public License) as of today. As far as I'm aware Symbian is currently the most widely used Operating System in the world - there were 100 million phones running Symbian in 2006 - so this means that as of this moment Free Software is now more widely used than proprietary software. That's a pretty significant shift in the way of things, especially considering Symbian own 67% of the smartphone market, with Windows Mobile holding only 13%... read more...

Oh, forgot to mention in the last post: I've been spending some time recently talking with The Cedars, winners of the MI7 Real World contest. Looks like the plan is for me to produce the session at Real World Studios sometime next month, if all goes well. I'm very much looking forward to it, they are a great band, and I think we could create some damn fine tracks there. Let's see... read more...

I haven't been posting much in the past couple of months, mainly because I've been taking time to work on a new book and get some personal business stuff out of the way.

Things are looking interesting though... we've been approached about a new record deal, and asked to play some more festivals at the end of the year / beginning of next year. So the plan is to spend as much time as possible in the studio over the next few months and finally finish off all of the things that have been sitting on the hard drive for ages in a half-finished state.

So someday soon I might even get round to putting some new songs on the music player! :-)

I'm very excited to be able to tell you all May 26 is the date set for release of Calendargirl's album...  featuring me (of course), and several other MI7 members- please support  it; it not only means exposure for lesser-known artists like myself, but a better way for talented people to get their music heard by a wider audience, who might not have other avenues for exposure.

THINK about artists you may love today, that you might never have heard, except through chance- don't you deserve a better opportunity, than some happenstance random discovery?

Artists like Calendargirl (Tamara Barnett-Herrin) and others of us who are looking toward the future think so... join us, and  let's look forward toward  a musical future based more on what's possible, rather than what's permitted!

And again, for those of you who don't know me, by "remix" I mean "re-interpretation".  :)

I was lucky to get a chance to work on another original track by rocha here at MI7 (community.mi7.com/profile/1463), and this is the result.

Calendar GirlHere's the link and teaser to an interview I've conducted on behalf of ccMixter with the talented, intelligent, gracious and funny Calendar Girl:

"In October 2006, singer song-writer Tamara Barnett-Herrin from London in the UK published a one sentence challenge to herself and to remixers around the World Wide Web: “I write one song a month. You remix and feedback. We make a record.” This experiment in songwriting and remix culture unlike any other yielded over 300 remixes, setting a new record at ccMixter. Twelve of them have been chosen to be published in an album titled Calendar Songs Volume I due out May 26 (check calendarsongs.com). Known to the ccMixter community as Calendar Girl, she has graciously agreed to an interview with ccMixter."

I was saddened yesterday to discover that a real nice net label that I have released 2 albums on seems to be calling it quits.  The label is OUIM they were founded in Bulgaria in 2005 and have consistently offered some very fine electronica from all over the world.  The quality is high on every release I have heard from composition to presentation of the final product, with very nice looking cover art and high bit-rate downloads.  The label hasn't offered a new release since my early January offering called "Winter EP" and the site says we are closed, sorry.  Fortunately all their fine music is still available there to download for free, and I strongly recommend the works highly.  For killer modern hard stuff try Death On Glamours LP, and for the most atmospheric ambient check out any of Observation Point's releases.  I can only hope, that continued support may bring this fine label back from closure.  In the meantime, if someone can recommend a similar net label, I need a new home for my free albums. read more...
