Curious Comp Numbers

Having only entered this here Realworld fandango a few days ago i found that on doing so that the sign up page only allowed 3 songs to be entered and then it was said i could not enter anymore.

But curiously on checking some of the others in the comp  i see there are cases where 4 and even 5 songs have been entered and allowed by other bands.

I mean its a big ` whatever ' as far as i am concerned but it certainly changes the percentages and chart allocation for everyone involved.

Just a interesting thought thats all.

It has been said that people who have entered early on in the contest could enter more than three songs, because of a bug in the system.

Well its a shame it was not fixed and people with more than 3 asked to choose their three rather let it going on till now.

The chart is one way of finding and searching the most popular mixes and people with more than 3 mixes entering the chart will effectively be keeping a few others out. There may be one mix at number 32 for instance that might be the winning song but we will have to search to find it where as i might be voting on it now if it were at number 30.

Anyway like i said its a big `whatever' just a shame the outcome of a bug was not publically fixed while there was time .

Well, just repeating what I have read somewhere else around here, although I understand your reasoning.

I personally look at that top 30 every now and again, but don't use it to listen and vote for songs in it. I always try to listen to all the songs of fellow members when they make a friends request or when there are new members with interesting taglines or song descriptions. And I also try to keep up with new songs from members who are already friends. And when one or more of these songs are entered into a competition then I will vote for them. But I understand that other members use other methods for voting, which might give some contestants a disadvantage.

I am one of the guys who has 4 songs in the contest. As said it was a bug in the very first days of the contest which has been fixed later on without correction. However please keep in mind that we have about 1540 songs in the contest. So the % advantage for somebody who has participated from this bug is

Songs % advantage

5 0,32
4 0,26
3 0,19

not a big number or ? To me it still would not be any problem to remove one of my songs in case I am asked by MI7, but there are probably hundreds of others not being in the top ten who also have entered 5 songs. That happened to almost all early birds here.

just realised that my table looks a bit strange

5 Songs = 0,32 % of all songs
4 songs = 0,26 % of all songs
3 songs = 0,19 % of all songs

Wish you all luck as your songs are great and I have already voted for all 3 of them.

In the end it is the quality that counts. I could have entered with 5 crappy songs and wouldn't stand a chance against a member with only one good song in the contest.

However, quality alone is not the only factor that plays an important role in this (or any other contest). The number of votes also play a role and, like it or not (and I know some people feel awkward about it), one has to draw attention to his/her/their music to stand a chance. I have listened to and voted for music that was very good and could compete with anyone in the top 30, but it will never happen, because too few people will hear their music.

So, I think that quality (which the music from both of you has in abundance) and potential listeners/voters are more important factors than number of songs entered in deciding who will win.

Anyway, sorry to abuse your blog to voice my opinion, but I just wanted to share my thoughts on the topic, after thinking about it some more.

Subliminal i don't see it as abuse of the blog i welcome your view. Of course , quality will count that's a given in a competition is it not ? The best song will win wont it ?

But on the percentages Mindmovie has given, it accounts that approx 100 songs are in the comp that should not be there, quality or no quality.

That does a few things. If the voting page automatically throws up mixes for someone to listen to, then statistically those with more songs will be presented there to a passing casual world.

The chart is a visual indication of who is doing well and promotes the good stuff at that time in turn. That's what its there for is it not.?

So while i, like you, have voted for songs that are not in the chart, the chances of seeing those people just get a glimpse are lowered by those that have more songs and have also chart placed already. The chart is still a good advertisement for those who do not have time to search 1500 plus songs to find better ones.

Whilst Mindmovie has done a good job of minimising the advantage, there still none the less is an advantage.

And i am informed that if someone wins who has entered more than three songs and has more than three in the chart when the comp has finished only then will they be asked to remove one. Thereby allowing 31 to become 30.

By then of course it will all be academic and the bands who would have been happy just to see their name in the chart for a few days will never know if they made the grade in any way.

So i agree, quality of music will be the deciding factor, but the distribution of songs entered versus our listening time is unfairly spread for the random choices mentioned.

I will suggest to the new England football manager that we start with 13 men the next time we play Sweden. I mean what difference can it make if the best team in the end wins ? :-)

Ok, point taken. :-) I agree that people with more than three entries have an advantage, especially considering those voters who use the contest page to give the randomly selected songs a listen. I don't know if that advantage would turn out to be a significant one, but let's not go there.

I do find it a bit odd that people are asked to remove songs after the contest has finished. Like you said, people who were 'denied' a (temporary) place in the top 30, because of the too-many-entries bug, would gain nothing by that. It would have been better if they would have asked people with more than three entries to remove the extra entries after discovering the bug. It would have even be better if said bug had never existed, but accidents happen (and as a former software engineer I had my fair share of accidents ;-) ).

Decided to remove one of my songs so now it's 3 songs
member image Coast To Coast | 12 months ago |
Mindmovie you did not have to do that, as it believe its up to the site to correct their mistakes officially not us alone.

But its a great gesture on your part so all the best with your entries. :-)

The community, friendship and chatting together about our favourite "music" is much more important than the contest. I do not care to much about winning or losing in this contest.

Wow. It's kind of odd to hear folks care about the music. Everybody I know seems to be incredibly focused on record and/or download sales. Not that I wouldn't want to move units (Let's make money! LOL!)but it's refreshing to hear (or read) somebody give a damn about making good music! Peace to the Mindmovie and all those who think likewise!!!
