Abell - distant galaxy mix (remixing c.layne)

I found this mesmerizing a cappella by c.layne over at ccMixter and had some fun with it and just uploaded the resulting remix here at mi7 as well.

Hey, Mr. Spin.

Usually, I feel that when someone says "it sounds like ...," somehow, it can take an essential, albeit small, quality away from the song in question and reduce the piece to a somewhat derivation of the comparison song/artist in question.

All right, maybe that’s a bit extreme, but ... ya get my drift? So, I am hesitant. That’s why I hinted at it, when I left my comment.

I must say, I really like your Distant Galaxy Mix as a track on it's own. Period. And since you have given me your blessing, Spin :—) (“Yeehah, boy, the flood gates is open!”), I'm now going to add that if Enya was producing the Mommas & Poppas, this is what it would sound like—Nice! That was my visceral reaction. Another thing occurred to me, and it's something I have been wrestling with every waking moment—for a full two days, actually—since, first I heard your mix.
There is a keyboard sound; it comes in @3:49mins. It wasn't until 5:30, though, that I started to think "that reminds me of something." (The sound, not the playing.) Finally, 15 minutes ago, it came to me. Are you familiar with Bowie's Ashes to Ashes? Right at the end there's a keyboard sound similar to yours. It's a great sound.
I'll have you know that I was going through every early '80s's synth songs I could recall: Ultravox, no; Gary Numan, no; Bill Nelson/BeBop Deluxe, no; John Foxx, no ... and the list went on and on and on. All bands that I love, by the way. Finally, of course, Mr. Bowie. Once again, nice.

Wow, thank you so much for your comments of generous support, too, Spin. I would like to think I know how to “cobble together a hummable ditty or two,” but I think it’s more that I have learnt (ed-?) a trick or two, along the way. But your words brought a tear to my eye. Really. Thank you.

NOW. You can breathe easy, Spinmeister ... Ready? ... NO, I did not put the flash intro together. It was designed by the very wonderful Laurence Whiteley, UK blues guitarist and illustrator. He’s got a web site with a dot com on the end of his name, if you’re interested in viewing his illustrations. He’s a real sweetheart ... Oh yeah, and a lifelong friend.

By the way, can I pick your brains? How did you get “web page” to come up as a live link on the comments you left? I’ve not been able to work that one out.

All the best, my man. Keep crankin’ them tracks. RT
